Automatic Transmission Manufacturers Automatic Transmissions have been with us almost as long as cars themselves, but volume production took-off in the USA in the 1940's. In the UK several variations of clutch- less or self-changing gearboxes appeared after the war. The Smiths Easy Drive and Pre-selector gearboxes used by Lancaster and Daimler being two such types. It is interesting that the development of modern electronics has brought both concepts back into contention again. Saab and Audi both offer options with this type of transmissions. Borg Warner produced Automatic Transmissions in the UK for 30 years but production ceased long ago, however they continue to produce the transfer gearbox for the Land Rover and Range Rover vehicles. Borg-Warner is now well known in the USA for manual gearboxes. Automotive Products (AP) similarly stopped production of the Mini transmission in the early nineties thus bringing an end to Automatic Transmission production in the UK. European manufacturers of Automatic Transmissions include Ford, GM, Mercedes, Renault and Volkswagen (Audi). The German independent company ZF produce transmissions for BMW, Jaguar, Peugeot, Rover and Citroen. In fact very few car manufacturers have not used ZF  products at sometime. In the Far East there are two prominent producers - Jatco and Aisin-Warner manufacturing for Nissan, Toyota and Subaru. Honda and Mitsubishi produce for their own requirements and Fuji continue to manufacture the CVT transmissions used by Nissan. Increasingly Japanese product is finding it way into European vehicles with Renault, Rover, Vauxhall and Volkswagen sourcing part of their production requirements from the East. The market continues to evolve with Korea an emerging manufacturer of transmissions catering for the needs of KIA, Hyundai, Proton, and Daewoo. No matter where transmissions are manufactured, TES remain confident of contributing to the advancement and betterment of the transmission rebuilding industry.
